"Salute to African American Fathers & Their Children"

May 26, 2004 -- "Salute to African American Fathers & Their Children" which will feature the
first of its kind "My Daddy Can BBQ Better than Your Daddy Contest."
This event will be held in Abbott Park located at 95th and the Dan Ryan on Saturday, June 19th. As you
know, this is the community that produced Juwan Howard. The purpose of the event is to use the
celebration of Father's Day to highlight the important role that fathers play in the lives of their
children. Unfortunately, young African American fathers have been stigmatized in the media as being
irresponsible fathers. Logically having to deal with "stressful survival issues" creates a
difficult environment for low-income black men to take on traditional roles as fathers. This environment
becomes even more difficult for the African American father. However, without considering the social and
economic factors that nonresident Black fathers have to battle, these fathers have been labeled as
deadbeats, sexually irresponsible, and financially unreliable.
