CALIFORNIA BBQ HEADS TO K.C.
JACK DANIELS COMPETITION IS NEXT
Signature Sauce Company Co-Owner and Champion Cooker
Grant Ford to Cook in Two International Events in October
Long Beach, Calif. Grant Ford, co-owner of Southern California's premier barbecue sauce purveyor
BBQ'n Fools (www.bbqnfools.com) will travel
to the 24th American Royal Barbecue competition next week to defend his title and the honor of the
sauce! against all comers. Ford has won awards in this competition two years running, and hopes for a
three-peat' October 2-4, in Kansas City, Mo.
Following that, it's off to Lynchburg, Tenn., for the 15th Annual Jack Daniel's World
Championship Invitational Barbecue on Saturday, October 25th. This is an invitation-only event, where
just 50 teams make the cut. Grant will "make the cut" on several excellent pieces of meat. The
competition covers pork ribs, pork shoulder, whole hog, beef brisket and chicken.
"I've won 1st place in Chicken four times in a row at California State Championship
competitions," said Grant. "It will be a challenge to see how my chicken does on a national
level."
The ARB event in Kansas City (www.americanroyalbbq.com/) begins the six-week American Royal, which includes a
rodeo, livestock shows, parade and of course the world's largest barbecue contest. The event is
one of the largest non-fair expos in North America, and began as a national cattle show in the Kansas
City Stockyards in 1899.
The competition is officially sanctioned and operates under the rules established by the Kansas City
Barbeque Society (www.kcbs.us), the largest
international organization of barbecue enthusiasts. The society sanctions contests and supervises the
judging process at contests all over North America.
The Jack Daniel's World Championship is "One of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast",
according to the Southeast Tourism Society, and one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the
world. Teams from the U.S. and around the world including Jamaica, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom,
Germany, Ireland, Japan, and Switzerland are expected.
Grant plans to give last year's winner, Wee Willy's Bar-B-Q from Afton, Minnesota, a challenge,
as well as winners of other BBQ competitions this year from the Memphis in May, the Houston Livestock
Show & Rodeo Barbecue and the American Royal in Kansas City.
"Last time the team was together at the American Royal, we took 16th overall at the invitational
not bad," Grant said. "This time I'm going solo from BBQ'n Fools, but getting great
help from my wife Jeni. Sy Kaster and his wife Pat Jeni's parents we'll there, and I'm
putting them to work too!"
BBQ'n Fools, the company Grant co-owns, recently doubled distribution of its award-winning sauce to
40 Southern California Albertson's stores. BBQ'n Fools products are also in restaurants:
Steak-O-Rama, in Belmont Shore, Backwoods Barbeque in Corona even Verizon Wireless cafeteria in
Irvine! Shoppers in several Southern California counties and three other states (Florida, Arkansas and
Texas) can find the products in local stores; shoppers anywhere in the world can find it on-line at www.bbqnfools.com, along with testimonials, and a
list of awards.
The sauce has won more than 60 awards including the 2003 Fiery Food Challenge, a 1st place Award of
Excellence from the National Barbeque Association, 2002 Scovie honors, and ARB contests. Company
co-owners are Tom Brohamer, Kurt Weidmann and Phil "Grant" Ford.
