San Francisco, CA September 22, 2004 -- The West Coast's greatest Big Bands play head-to-head on
two stages, as Bay Area teams compete for an exciting and one-of-a-kind Barbecue Showdown.
The Fillmore Jazz District Promotions Office and Merchants Association present the first annual,
"Fillmore Jazz District Big Band Duel & BBQ Cook-off" on Sunday, October 10, 11:00am to 6:00pm. The
corner of Fillmore and Eddy Streets will be transformed into an open-air supper club, complete with two
stages and a 2,000 square foot dance floor.
This event will feature six of the Bay Area's preeminent big bands that will provide a musical
gumbo of swing, jazz and Latin music in a serious yet friendly battle. The amazing line-up will feature
Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Asian American Jazz
Orchestra, The Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band, The SFJAZZ All-star Youth Orchestra, and Latin big
bands Quimbombo and Jesus Diaz and QBA.
Activities will kick-off with a performance by the stellar SFJAZZ All-star Youth Orchestra as a
celebration of the future of jazz. The music will continue throughout the day in the spirit of the great
big band duels at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where jazz orchestras like Duke Ellington's and
Chick Webb's vied for the attention of the New York City's feverish swing dancers. The big
bands will be paired and play side-by-side on two stages, creating unique opportunities for dancers and
listeners to enjoy the Bay Area's most exciting groups as they create a call-and-response style
friendly duel as well as perform their solo repertoires.
The intoxicating aroma of barbecue will fill the air as teams of families, friends, community
organizations and faith-based groups compete for prizes and prize money for the best barbecue. A team of
local celebrity judges will have the daunting task of sampling and selecting the "best" in the chicken
and pork ribs categories. Judges will be assigned to each category and select the first, second and
third place winners based on taste, appearance and creativity.
The entry fee for the barbecue cook off is $100.00 and entitles a "2-10" person team to a
10'x15' cooking space, table, chairs and an official Fillmore Jazz District Big Band Duel and
Barbecue Cook-off T-shirt. Contestants can enter one or all of the categories. Forms, guidelines and
event schedules are available online at www.fillmorejazz.com. The deadline for entry is September 15, 2004.
